Expect to hear the unexpected rather than the greatest hits from when she was annointed the salsa queen of Fania Records in the 70s. This list journeys from the early years of her career in Cuba, her Afro-Cuban praise songs, her go-go collaborations with Tito Puente and songs about immigration, to her late-career collaborations with rock and pop artists. Also included are tracks by heirs to her musical and stylistic legacy.

Listen on Qobuz or Spotify:

<a class="image-link image2" Her influence on the sound of Latin music, her pioneering example as a global star, Black, female and Caribbean, who was the most successful Afro-Latina singer ever; her trailblazing path as a crossover artist with a capacity for reinvention and her continued impact are much more profound and wide-ranging.

“We have a tendency to put things on different shelves — it’s not like that,” Angélique Kidjo told me when I interviewed her about Celia, her album of Cruz cover songs with an African tinge. “Celia is really one of those rare artists who a jazz musician knows, who R&B people know. Everywhere I go, people know who she is. This woman has done so much for us. The world cannot forget her; I can’t allow that to happen. I wanted new generations to understand how she impacted the artists of today.”

Celia’s work and life have been particularly significant for younger genrations of Afro-Cuban women, who have channeled their idol through her repertoire, but also plugged in to her her vocal power, human touch and her drive, and have themselves achieved success by their own definitions.

“Latin music is dominated by men,” says singer Aymée Nuviola, who played Cruz in a 2015 telenovela about her life and has since won four Grammys and two Latin Grammys . “You never totally feel that you are taken seriously, that everyone knows that you can run a show and move the masses. It must not have been easy for Celia. I’m honored to be compared to someone with her kind of grandure.”

“Celia conquered the world with her voice and her huge heart,” says Lucrecia, the Cuban singer who has portrayed Celia Cruz in the musical theater production about her life, Celia: El Musical, and who Cruz herself called her successor. “She was noble, a woman of the old school.”

Lucrecia recalls Celia as an idol who became a mentor, and a friend, after they met at a concert in Barcelona after Lucrecia left Cuba in the 1990s.

“She remembered everyone’s name. You’d meet her once and she’d be sending you postcards for the rest of her life.”

Cruz’s frequent collaborations with diverse younger artists were a gift to them, but also allowed the legend to connect to new audiences in her later years.

Musical tributes to Celia have come from Sheila E. Celia Cruz left Cuba for good in 1960. She arrived in New York City to stay in 1962 and was reunited with the band that had brought her fame, La Sonora Matancera. And also with band member Pedro Knight, her best friend and the love of her life, who she married that year in July.

“Living in a city is much different from visiting one. New Yorkers were different from anyone I was used to,” she remembered in her autobiography, written with the journalist Ana Cristina Reymundo. “The language and customs of the city were alien to me. All the concrete and total lack of nature always seemed odd. The buildings were so tall that I sometimes got dizzy just looking up at them.”

The couple settled temporarily on the Upper West Side, in the same building as the Cuban singer Rolando Laserie, who had also gone into exile.

“The one thing I admired about New York City from the moment I arrived was its ability to embrace so many diferent types of people,” Cruz said in the autobiography, adding that as a foreigner she did not always feel accepted.

“..What I did find difficult during my first year in New York were the beauty parlors. I was very excited because American black women had a new way of doing their hair. They first ironed it, and then they would weave artificial hair into one’s own relaxed hair. It was a time-consuming process, so I would show up at the beauty parlor at seven in the morning, and I wouldn’t leave until four in the afternoon. The beauticians would ignore my appointment and let their friends go ahead of me. They took advantage of me because I didn’t speak English. They knew I coudn’t speak fror myself. That helpless feeling I had when I waited to get my hair done inspired me to learn English, although I still have a terrible accent whenever I speak it. As I always say, my English is not very good looking.”

Those feelings were later reflected in in “Todos Somos Iguales” (“We are all Equal”), a plea for unity in the face of difference she recorded with Willie Colón. Watch them perform the song, with Celia as the frontwoman for the Willie Colon Orchestra during this 1980 concert at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ (Minute 5:26.)

Cruz will always be remembered, most of all, as a singer of upbeat songs who eagerly met the world and its odds with a smile on her face. But she did touch on social issues in her music. In her years with Fania records, particularly when she performed with Willie Colon, the alchemist who orchestrated salsa’s New York barrio sound. She addressed the Pan-Latin population in the United States in the song “Latinos en Estados Unidos,” from the album Celia y Willie. The lyrics urged Latin American immigrants to unite, to not fear shouting out that they were Latino and to keep on speaking Spanish.

“Let’s be thankful to this land of peace,” she sings, “that gives us a new future and an opportunity. But now that we are far from our native soil, let’s fight to find our own truth…” Listen to and see the original Spanish lyrics to the song, written by Guadalupe Garcia Garcia and Cucco Peña, performed by Cruz in the clip below.
<div id="youtube2-7r0YTmP5_RU" class="youtube-wrap" Puente’s arrangement added congas, timbales and the punch of Latin big band horns to the groove of the hippie culture-inspired psychedelic pop spiritual. The track starts off dance-floor frenetic, leveling out as Cruz’s echoing vocals call out “Acuario” to the universe, then brings it in for what feels like the tight drum circle of an Afro-Cuban ceremony, with the singer’s voice spiraling into a soul-shaking chant:

“La la la la

Que brille el sol

El sol que alumbra” (“Let the sun shine, the sun that sheds light.”)

In a televised performance of “Aquarius,” Celia appears in the snug tropi-pop pant suit with ruffled bell bottoms and sleeves that she wears on the cover of Quimbo Quimbumbia. Her high hairdo holds steady as she go-gos and rumbas alone on a round stage in silver shoes, her hoop earrings shaking to the beat. It was not what audiences may have expected from a Cuban nightclub star then best known for wearing sequined cocktail gowns as she sang with a tropical big band.

“Our adaption of that song was a hit around the world” Celia later declared in her autobiography, Celia: My Life, written with journalist Ana Cristina Reymundo. It was a welcome success. At the time, Puente, iconic bandleader of New York’s mambo scene, and Cruz, whose fan base had grown beyond Cuba to throughout Latin America, were so well known that they could release an album using just their first names. But, as Hair, the “American Tribal Love Rock Musical,” so frankly exposed, this was the dawn of a new era. And the times were changing for Latin music.

“Young people, the major target audience for the music industry, began to turn their back on our music,” Cruz later recalled. “…The late 1960s and throughout the 1970s was the age of rock and disco, and as a result, my people’s music was barely played. Many believed that Cuban music was something of the past, and that it belonged only in the homes of Cuban exiles and at dances for older people. In other words, Cuban music just wasn’t hip.”

“…They saw it as old fashioned,” she lamented. “As a result, we went through a couple of slow years.”

Nuyorican Tito Puente had always been a trendsetter, able to translate the spirit of the day into music, and also to spot talent: in 1965, three years after Cruz had landed in New York from Cuba for good, he orchestrated her signing with Tico Records. Quimbo Quimbumbia was the second album the artists made together on the label.

“Tito Puente was one of the first… to have a female singer be the front of an orchestra,” Tito Puente Jr. explained in a 2023 BBC audio documentary about the pioneering bandleader. “But not only that, my father really went and pushed it into the faces of the American public by not only having a female but having an Afro-Cuban black woman fronting an orchestra. And that was really a shock to everybody at that time, in the 1960s.”

The gorgeous and groovy Celia Cruz on Spanish television in 1970:

With their version of “Aquarius,” Puente and Cruz quickly capitalized on the success of Hair in New York and beyond: in 1969, the musical had its Spanish-language premiere (and was raided by police) in Mexico, and it was soon shocking audiences in some South American countries. As the opening track of Quimbo Quimbumbia, the unexpected version of the then ubiquitous song announced that neither Tito and Celia nor Latin music were going to fall behind the times.

Hair premiered on Broadway in 1968 after workshopping at Joseph Papp’s downtown Public Theater and then, unconventionally, at a nightclub, The Cheetah Club. In a review of the Broadway production in The New York Times, critic Clive Barnes cited its references to drugs and homosexuality, its instantly famous nude climax, its racially diverse cast and “attitudes of protest and alienation.” The show rocked the conventions of the New York theater world and created a stage for the clash of generations and a search for identity that, against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, the civil rights movement, and, in New York City, a steep rise in the Puerto Rican population, was calling into question what it meant to be American.

Tito and Celia’s version of “Aquarius” could be seen as a show of Latino pride, an answer to those who questioned their cool, and the potential of their appeal to any audience. Other artists in New York were singing in English, cooking up the boogaloo, a crossover style that fused R&B with Latin rhythms, with English lyrics. But Quimbo Quimbumbia is entirely in Spanish, with a repertoire astutely selected and produced by Puente to have success with international audiences, beyond the New York barrio.

The songs on the album include “Génesis,” a ballad that had won first prize at the inaugural International Latin Song Festival in Mexico City, where it was performed by the popular young Puerto Rican singer Lucecita Benítez, just two months before it was recorded by Puente and Cruz.

“Corazón Contento” covers a 1968 hit for the Spanish pop pioneer Marisol, who brought rock-and-roll attitude and flamenco airs to a mass audience in the time of Franco’s dictatorship.

On “La Danza de la Chiva,” Celia stretches her vocal muscles to a frisky merengue beat. A guaracha that winks to cumbia, “Quimbo Quimbumbia” was written by José Carbó Menéndez, the mid-Century Cuban composer who supplied Celia and Tito with the popular song “Cao Cao Mani Picao.”

More nostalgic, “Mi Querida Borinquen” is an emotional ode to Puerto Rico; and the jaunty mambo “En El Cafetal” covers a song previously recorded by Daniel Santos, the famed singer who, like, Celia, had performed with the Cuban orchestra La Sonora Matancera.

The powerful “Yo Soy la Voz,” is a more bittersweet look back. Declaring herself “the voice of the Cuba of yesteryear” in the song, Cruz references her own exile from Cuba, taking a dig at Castro’s Revolution by declaring “I am free as the wind,” and admonishing that “the moment will come when music that left Cuba will return.” She pounds that political message home with “Yo Regresaré,” a cha cha chá with the country flavor of “Guantanamera” that includes her spoken message of encouragement for Cuban exiles: “No podemos perder la esperanza…volveremos a nuestra hermosa Cuba” (“We can’t lose hope…we will return to our Beautiful Cuba.”)

Cruz, who died in 2003, never went back to Havana. She would gain immortality as the queen of salsa, the music that some say was officially born at a wild jam session by the Fania All Stars on a night in 1971, at The Cheetah, the same New York club where the musical Hair had its tryout. Two years later, Celia would sign with the Fania label, igniting her global superstardom, which remains such that in 2024, the U.S. Mint would imprint the image of Cruz, the Afro-Cuban singer who Puente boldly put at the front of the band, on a quarter.

Puente rode the ebb and flow of the waves of Latin dance music’s popularity until his death in 2000. In 1970, Carlos Santana recorded his song “Oye Como Va,” increasing Puente’s income exponentially for decades and consecrating his name in the halls of rock; that song, in a sense, brought his music full circle, back to the young Latinos who had once passed it by. And by now generations more. Listening to these songs, the evergreen appeal of the music rooted in Cuban rhythms is undeniable. And it was obvious to Celia Cruz and Tito Puente all along.

“Hispanic youth felt compelled to dance to pop music in American clubs because it was fashionable,” Cruz reflected in her autobiography. “It may have been good music, but it just wasn’t theirs. It’s like dancing in borrowed shoes: no matter how nice they are, they still just don’t fit.

“It may be true that everything has its time and place,” she added. “But quality never goes out of style.”

Listen to “Aquarius” and other songs from the album Quimbo Quimbumbia on my Celia Cruz - 100 Years/100 Songs playlist, celebrating Celia’s centennial. As her recordings attest, she faced challenges (and aging) with an “ok, what else you got?” attitude.

Here are six duets that Celia recorded in the evening of her life with younger artists, encompassing Latin alternative, hip hop, disco and reggaeton (several years before it exploded into the mainstream with Daddy Yankee’s “Gasolina.”)

“Guantanamera”– Wyclef Jean Featuring Celia Cruz

Wyclef Jean paired Cruz with Lauryn Hill on his hip hop re-working of the song adopted as the Cuban popular national anthem, “Guantanamera.” It also features the much overlooked Jeni Fujita, who sings in duet with Celia to beats and guitar. And of course Wyclef himself.

Like other tracks on Wyclef’s 1997 The Carnival, it’s a natural and pretty genius mix of past and (then) present.

“That was then this is now,” Wyclef snaps, interrupting Celia’s singing of the familiar song in vintage style at the beginning of the track. But in fact the two had in common an unsinkable attitude and a taste for life-affirming music that embraced its ups and its downs. Donés was a bar stool philosopher whose glass-half-full point of view was epitomized by his song “Depende” (“It Depends”).

Celia’s own repertoire is full of songs that are likewise lessons in positive thinking, as outlined in her enduring celebratory hit “La vida es un carnaval.”

Along that vein, there’s not a lot of pondering going on in “A lo loco,” a 1998 party song that combines rumba flamenco and Brazilian samba and some rockabillyish guitar and urges listeners to “live life the way that you want.” It’s a bittersweet message from two artists known universally as wonderful humans, now both gone. I think it was 1986.

When their greatest hits compilation Vasos Vacíos came out in 1993, I was playing “Matador” loud in my Miami Beach apartment. The previously unreleased track won an MTV award and become a signature anthem for the band.

But another song I kept listening to was “Vasos Vacíos” (“Empty Glasses”), through which I discovered the seductive power of frontman Vicentico’s voice as a ballad singer.

On this duet Celia is in fantastic and uncharacteristically low-key form. The title track of Celia’s 2001 Latin Grammy-winning album features Mikey Perfecto, a Nuyorican rapper performing what was then still mainly being referred to as hip hop en español or Spanish dancehall and would soon explode as reggaeton.

Celia herself called the song “a salsa rap piece,” noting in her autobiography that “although the video was a bit risqué,” the song became a hit. She remembered that that although she almost fainted when she saw the clip directed by Ernesto Fundora, “it was a great help for the single and the album in general, and it became especially popular among men.”

The uncensored video:

“Soy Loco por ti América” - Caetano Veloso and Celia Cruz

Celia’s encounter with Brazilian Tropicália was not without some conflict. This love song for Latin America by Gilberto Gil and José Carlos Capinan, first recorded by Caetano Veloso in a bilingual Spanish and Portuguese version on his 1968 eponymous album, was written as a tribute to Che Guevara.

Capinan later said in an interview with the EFE news agency that it was written the very day that Guevara was murdered in Bolivia in October 1967. The icon of the Cuban Revolution is cryptically referred to in the song as “el hombre muerto” (“the dead man”), in order to not attract the attention of officials of Brazil’s military regime, who already had the members of the Tropicália song movement on their radar. (Gil and Veloso were arrested and jailed without trial on sketchy charges in early 1969. They both subsequently went into exile in London.)

Years later, according to Capinan, Celia passed on the song when she found it was inspired by Guevara. More surprising is the fact that she did record it.

Perhaps because “Soy loco por ti América” (“I’m Crazy About You America”) did not mention Guevara by name, and otherwise poetically extolled Latin American unity and the beauty of its landscapes -and maybe because the lyrics did include the name Martí (presumably a reference to historic Cuban hero José Martí), Celia did relent during a visit to Brazil and joined Veloso for a salsa version of the pop protest song.

Capinan said that Celia pointed out that the title of the song - a translation from Portuguese, was grammatically incorrect, and that it should be “Estoy loco por ti América.” Still, the track she recorded with Veloso is titled “Soy loco por ti América.”

It is included on her 1997 Duets album.

“Yo Viviré” - Celia Cruz featuring Lucrecia

Celia Cruz’s version of Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” is not the ultimate revenge song. Nor is it strictly a female empowerment anthem, although by virtue of the fact that it can be considered Cruz’s swan song, it’s that too. “Yo viviré” is at once a personal message from beyond in which Celia lets fans know she’s still here in her music, and a more universal song about music’s ancestral roots.

This version features the muscular voice of Lucrecia, a Celia protegé who frequently performs her late idol’s repertoire and has also played her onstage in Celia, the Musical. The track is included on the posthumous 2009 album La reina y sus amigos.
<div id="youtube2-t920avfbQY0" class="youtube-wrap" Art”), the same radio talent show on which Cruz had frequently appeared when she was a teenager.

When Cuervo sang on that popular program on Havana’s CMQ station in 1952, she performed a schmaltzy ballad with a dramatic Afro beat called “Camino de Sahara,” which had been recorded by the Spanish singer Pepe Reyes with the Conjunto Luis Santi for Panart. A better version was by La Sonora Matancera, sung by Celia Cruz, released with the title “Zahara” on the Seeco label in 1952 - it must of been a hit in Havana right at the time that Cuervo sang it on the radio show.

Cuervo, whose voice belied her years, was quickly embraced as a novelty act. Some called her a Celia Cruz imitator, but she was best known as “la niña artista.” (“the little girl artist.”)

The similarity of Cuervo’s budding voice to Celia’s was so endearing to audiences that rumors began to circulate that Cuervo was in fact Celia’s secret love child, as recalled in an essay written by Henry Puente on the blog Nostalgia Cubana.

Cruz did act as something of a mentor to Cuervo, and the child singer had opportunities to perform with the glamorous Cruz and Sonora Mantancera on radio and television.
<div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{"gallery":{"images":[{"type":"image/png","src":"https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/ec244c29-1306-4a78-84b7-6ec90a9005c8_264x462.png"},{"type":"image/png","src":"https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/e231066e-1df4-4720-8a00-eb02071fa10d_695x393.png"}],"caption":"Caridad Cuervo performing with Celia Cruz and rubbing elbows backstage. She was called “television’s prohibited voice.”

While Celia Cruz later went into exile, Cuervo, still just a teenager, remained in Havana. She released a second album in 1961 on the Cuban label Maype (which would afterward relocate to the United States). But the young singer seems to not have recorded a solo album again until her mature voice was captured on the album Caridad Cuervo with Conjunto Canay, which came out on the Cuban State record label EGREM in 1980.

One explanation, or perhaps a conspiracy theory, comes from Henry Puente in his post on the Nostalgia Cubana website. He writes that Cuervo was effectively blacklisted by the Cuban government for a time because of her similarities to Celia Cruz, who became a persona non grata in Cuba after she went into exile.

Cuervo would invigorate her career with a soul-sister image and, increasingly, her own vocal identity, which included sultry boleros, Afro-Cuban ritual music and country-flavored songs. But her repertoire largely remained aligned with the music of Celia Cruz: guarachas and rumbas, with arrangements in synch with the evolving times.
